After months of snow, ice, and freezing temperatures, we’re finally getting a bit of relief and sunshine here in the Fox Cities. However, Wisconsin’s harsh winters can definitely take a toll on your roof. As we head into spring, your roof deserves a little TLC.
Our Wisconsin roofing experts put together this simple spring roof maintenance checklist to help make sure your roof is in good shape this spring—and protect your home for the seasons ahead.
Note: Please use caution when inspecting your roof. Use a sturdy ladder or hire a professional with specialized equipment.
1. Clear Debris Off Your Roof
Check for branches, leaves, and other debris that may have piled up over the winter. This debris can trap moisture and cause faster wear and tear on your shingles. Pay special attention to the valleys and around your chimney if you have one, as these tend to be problem areas.
2. Check Gutters & Downspouts
Remove leaves, ice chunks, or leftover gunk from your gutters and downspouts. Clearing these out will allow water to flow away from your house, preventing foundation and roof issues.
If your Fox Cities home doesn’t already have gutter guards, it may be worth the investment. They keep leaves, pests, and other debris out, which helps extend the life of your gutters and reduces the amount of time you spend cleaning them out in the spring and fall!
3. Inspect Shingles for Damage
With ice dams, wind, and heavy snow, Wisconsin winters can do a number on your roof. Inspect your roof for signs of damage such as loose, cracked, or curled shingles.
Key things to look for include gaps or missing shingles, shingles that appear lifted or warped, and granule buildup in gutters. These are all signs of damage and potential warning signs that you need a new roof.
4. Look for Signs of Leaks
Head up to your attic or top floor to look for signs of a roof leak caused by all that winter snow. Some things to watch out for are water stains, mold, or musty smells.
Remember, leaks may not always be super obvious, like big water puddles on the floor. Use a flashlight when inspecting darker areas and take photos so you can continue to monitor if you’re unsure.
5. Check Flashing & Seals
Flashing around your chimneys, skylights, and vents should be tight and rust-free. As we transition from winter to spring and summer storms, you don’t want any water sneaking through these areas. Look carefully for any cracks, gaps, and light coming through where it shouldn’t.
6. Trim Nearby Trees
Head out to your yard and take a look at the trees. If any branches appear to be hanging close to your roof, consider trimming them back or hiring a professional to do it for you. Heavy winds during Wisconsin’s summer storms can cause these branches to fall or scrape against your roof, damaging your shingles and potentially letting critters into your home.
7. Check for Structural Issues
Large amounts of snow and fluctuating temperatures can put strain on your roof and impact structural integrity. Take a moment to look up at your roof and look for buckling, dips, cracks, or sagging along your roofline. These can be signs of serious and potentially dangerous structural issues.
8. Schedule a Professional Roof Inspection for Your Fox Cities Home
